“Young Earth” Glorifies the Creator…

Image“Older Earth” archaeologists tell us that there is overwhelming evidence pointing away from “Young Earth” beliefs, even if you believe in creation. But no eye witnesses….

I believe in creation and I can understand the “Young Earth” theory, that the earth is approximately 6-7,000 years old. I don’t believe the “overwhelming evidence” disproves the young earth. Let me explain my rational reason why.

Suppose we were to travel back in time to the 8th day after creation was initiated by God. An anthropologist examined Adam and Eve to determine their ages, us knowing they were two days old. However, the anthropologist would not come to that conclusion.

A zoologist would then examine the lion, elephant, tiger, dog, raccoon… (OK, you get the picture). They would have never deduced that the creatures were less than a week old, but we would know they were.

The same would be with the vegetation if examined by a horticulturist, the marine life if examined by a marine biologist, and the birds of the air if examined by an ornithologist.

But, you remind me, we were not there on day eight, so we have no eye witness to this.

As the sport analyst, Lee Corso, would say, “Not so fast, my friend.”

Let’s fast forward to the start of Jesus’ ministry and consider oenology. There were eye witnesses.

…the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” John 2:9-10.

The master of the banquet may not have been a master oenologist, but he knew it took time to raise grapes. He knew grapes had to be gathered from the field, and for this much wine (120-180 gallons) it would require a lot of grapes and much, much time to gather them. He knew that the grapes had to be trodden, crushed and drained, and this could not be done in moments, days, and probably weeks. This wine quality testified to a lengthy process, when you consider the complete process required to make it, package it and age it. Unless it was an act of God’s creative genius.

And along with the master of the banquet were all the servants, the bridegroom and his family, and what appears to be a large number of guests.

So the “New Earth” theory has far more eye witnesses than the “Old Earth” theory.

God has a beautiful way of making something knew and making it “test out” as mature. What an awesome God we serve!

  1. Hi Pastor Tim – The term should be “young earth” not “new earth” in this discussion. New earth in the Bible referes to the recreated earth in the future (Rev 21,22). In any case, consider that the earth was around long before Adam and Eve. The Spirit of God was hovering over the earth prior to the beginning of the first creation day. The Bible does not teach that the earth is 6,000-7,000 years old. The antiquity of God is compared to the mountains in the Old Testament. That wouldn’t be much of a testimony to the ancientness of God if it was just 3 or 4 of Adam’s life spans. There is overwhelming evidence that the earth is ancient. Not just among archaeologists, but in all of the sciences. There was a time not so very long ago when Bile believing Christians were certain that the earth was flat (there are verses that speak of the pillars that the Lord placed the earth on…) When it became irrefutable that the earth was a sphere, Christianity looked ignorant to thinking people. The young earth dogma is the modern day flat earth belief – it just makes believers look silly, which is not helpful to our mission of spreading the Gospel. Thank you for considering my input.

    • Yes, Anthony, I caught that in my blog but failed to catch it in my title. Thanks for your input. Your comments fail to address the issues in the blog. They pick up the speaking points of old earth, as if we have never heard them before. As a long time proponent of old earth and my understanding of the “gap theory”, I was amazed at the concept that this would not have been the only time God made something that was mature, and would confuse man’s understanding of the sciences.
Again, I thank you for taking the time to comment.

  2. Hi Pastor, I had not seen anything previous to the statement I responded to – someone on facebook posted that one item. In Romans Paul tells us that we can know something of God’s divinity and Godhead by observing His physical universe. If God made things with the appearance of age that would mislead us into thinking the world was older than it really was – He would be deceiving us. I don’t think that is a characteristic of God. The physical universe appears to be ancient because it is ancient. God said, “Let the earth bring forth…” He had already created the basics that would eventually bring forth life on it’s own. This is called the fully gifted creation.

    • Friend, all animals created were given the appearance of age, including Adam and Eve. The wine at the party was given age, no matter how you view it. The stars that are in other galaxies were created with light waves already most of the distance to earth, giving the appearance of age. Such a blanket statement is untenable.

The galaxy Andromeda is 2.5 million light years away, which means it takes 2.5 million years for the light from the galaxy to travel to earth to even be seen. Either that galaxy is at least 2.5 million years old or God built in apparent age.
