Do you want to speak in tongues or rather do you want to know God more? That is the most important question you may ask about this topic.
The gift of tongues was a temporary gift (all gifts are temporary, btw) to validate the message of the apostles to others when validation was needed. It was first shown in Jerusalem at Pentecost (Acts 2:3ff), next when the gospel was first preached to the Gentiles (Acts 10:46), and third, when the disciples of John the Baptist first heard the gospel (Acts 19:6ff).
It was imitated to fake spirituality (1 Corinthians 14 addresses the abuse and imitation), and still is today. But in short, it is no longer used of God because His Perfect Way has been completed when the Word of God was finished being written. Every teaching can now be compared to the completed Bible and validated or discarded. Early Christian had no such completed scriptures while it was still being written.
“Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.” 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 (ESV).
Modern teaching on tongues has giving it other purposes that are outside of the scriptures. Teachers have created in their audiences a desire for something extra, as if Christ living in us is not enough. They have produced a distraction from the simple act of living by faith and obedience to His Word.
Jesus had one formula for distractions. “…seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” Matthew 6:33.
He has one formula for growing spiritually. “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith– that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead” Philippians 3:8-11.
The Holy Spirit’s job has never been to reveal Himself, but to reveal the truth in Jesus. “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged” John 16:5-11.
Please reject the self-indulgent and self-obsessive teachings of the Holy Spirit movement and follow Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit as He commanded. Seek to know Jesus and the Holy Spirit will do His complete work in you for that.
“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith–that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” Ephesians 3:14-19.
